There is probably no time of the year where the worm fishing is better than from June through mid August, and I am finding as I put fishermen in the boat that most worm fishermen just don’t want to keep their rod tip in a 12 o’clock position while the worm works itself to the bottom. As good a time of year as it is for worm fishing, you just don’t want to be missing fish because you can’t get a good hook set off your worm rig.

Every year about this time we get into the severe 90 degree heat days, and I see folks struggle on the water to stay cool enough to still enjoy their day on the water. The first things I tell my customers are to bring a towel and keep it wet and keep it around your neck. The water around the back of the neck cools the complete body, in fact your head and neck control most of your body temperature; if you’re hot around the head and neck your body temperature is high if you’re cool you’re body temperature cools down.

Guntersville has become so popular for the grass bite that most anglers run right by the many boat houses stacked on the shore for miles up and down the river. While the greater percentage of anglers ignores the boat houses, I believe it is a pattern that can win tournaments and create some fun for a day of fishing. The key is finding boat houses that hold the bass; well this is no different than finding the grass humps or grass lines that hold fish.

As the Lowrance Structure Scan becomes more of each fisherman’s tool bag, I seem to be getting more questions on how to read what you are looking at on your screen. Every day I put fisherman in my boat that have newly acquired an HDS Lowrance unit and have it equipped with Structure Scan or down scan; the problem is the first time they take it to the water, it seems to just add confusion instead of clarity.

As we move from the end of the spring fishing there is definitely a major change in the fishing pattern. The shift is definitely one of the most dramatic changes in patterns over the 12 month period that we as anglers experience. The key to me is becoming aware of why the pattern changes and where the bass move too.
